Chhattisgarh assembly elections
JAGDALPUR: High price of onion is pinching everyone in the country. But, it pinches more in the region where over 70% of the population gets rice at Rs 2 per kg, gram at Rs 5 per kg and pulses at Rs 10 per kg but onion at Rs 80 per kg.
Sensing the irony where poor tribal people depend more on rice, salt and onion for their regular meals, Gujarat chief minister and BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Thursday did not forget to bring the issue in his speech while seeking to strike a chord with the tribals who otherwise appeared quite indifferent of coalgate, 2G or other scams.
Addressing his first public rally in the Maoist-dominated Bastar region, Modi said, "Congress has snatched onions, the food of poor people. It is now time to snatch power from them."
The crowd was excited. It was a good opportunity for Modi to bring in other issues at this juncture while seeking votes for the local BJP candidates. Jagdalpur district has three assembly constituencies which will go to polls along with nine others in the Bastar region on November 11.
Mocking at the Congress party's slogan 'Congress ka haath aam aadmi ke saath', Modi accused the party of being busy in stealing. "You are busy doing haath ki safai," he said amid peals of laughter.
Raking up the issue of coal scam, Modi took a jibe at Congress saying, "People are now opening lockers to store coal." He said the people will now have to open lockers for onion as well — drawing first applause of the gathering at Lal Bag Maidan.
Using an analogy of a growing child whose future depends on how he or she is nurtured between ages 13 and 18, Modi appealed people to vote for BJP so that it can come to power again for five years and help the state grow during its 13th to 18th years (since its formation).
He said," These coming five years will similarly lay the foundation of development for the next hundred years where the future of your children will remain secured in the state."
Modi, who began his speech in local dialects, invoked the BJP leader and former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's name repeatedly in his 38-minute speech and sought to remind the gathering of how Vajpayee had helped the formation of Chhattisgarh.
In a clear reference to what is happening in Andhra Pradesh where the UPA government is trying to create Telangana, Modi said that Vajpayee did help in the formation of three states — Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand — after taking people into confidence and the three new states were created without any bloodshed and heartburn.
Praising Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh, Modi said it was Singh who had worked to develop the state in past 10 years. "Look at other new states. Jharkhand and Uttarakhand slipped into negative zone in terms of development. Raman Singh, however, worked hard to develop Chhattisgarh," he said.
